Heritage Sandy Springs Museum: Earlier this month, the exhibit “Heroes of Sandy Springs” opened to showcase the history of policing and firefighting in the city. Through archives, artifacts and film clips, the exhibit details how police and fire rescue teams sprouted from all-volunteer efforts and expanded in ethnic diversity. On display through Feb. 15. The museum is open Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and by appointment. Enjoy free, annual summer concerts featuring variety of talented performers, as well as other family-oriented activities throughout the summer. This annual outdoor concert series is a fantastic way to spend an evening under the stars. Concerts feature a variety of talented performerzs in a fun, picnic-style atmosphere.

Speed Week is a series of seven races in seven southeastern cities that begins in Athens, Georgia and ends with the finale in Sandy Springs. Nationally-ranked athletes take to the streets to contest the series as well as qualifying positions in the USA CRITS Series Finals. Preceding the Speed Week Finale is the 62-mile Global Imports Sandy Springs Cycling Challenge ride.

Once again, the Terrapin Twilight Criterium in downtown Athens, GA kicks off the week-long series of seven races in nine days.  Also returning to the series are the annual events in Roswell and Sandy Springs in Georgia, as well as Beaufort, Walterboro, and Spartanburg in South Carolina.

2012 USA CRITS Speed Week Schedule:

Bring your kayak or raft and beat the heat with a six-mile float along the Chattahoochee River during the annual Summer Splash in July. After completing the float, enjoy an afternoon of live music, food and fun for the entire family during festivities at Powers Island. Guests can bring their own kayak, canoe or raft, or rent one from one of our local outfitters.

From our headquarters, you can canoe or kayak on an hourly basis. If you want to take a short trip down the river, you can raft, canoe, kayak or tube from Don White Memorial Park (a 1.5 mile trip). If you want a longer trip, we can put you in at Island Ford and you can paddle downriver 3 miles. If you’re feeling really adventurous and want an all-day trek, we can send you on an 8 mile trip from Garrard Landing in a canoe or kayak. For all of these trips, we can shuttle you from Azalea Park to the put-in location of your choosing and you can paddle or float back to Azalea Park. Reservations are recommended for Azalea Park rentals as demand is high for our equipment; you can call us at (770) 650-1008 to set up a reservation. Walk-ins are welcome; however, we do not like disappointing people when all of our equipment is rented.

We also offer raft, canoe and kayak trips from Johnson Ferry to Paces Mill (about a 6.5 mile trip). From the Powers Island location we rent tubes, rafts, canoes and kayaks for a 3 mile trip to Paces Mill. These trips are only avaliable on Saturdays and Sundays with a prepaid reservation as we can not take payment within the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area Parks.

Payment is due in full at the time reservations are made. A current driver’s license is required for all rentals. We accept all major credit cards. To receive a refund on a cancellation, we must be notified 14 days prior to the trip date. If your trip is cancelled or cut short due to weather, you can reschedule for a later date.
